Art

There are 2 types of definitions for art:

1. the cramped, insufficient kind that is severely lacking in thought. It brings up a million “but what about (insert non-traditional form of art here), isn’t that art?” Although this one is unsettling, it’s still an easy way out.

2. the frustratingly vast, dishonest kind. The kind people give to avoid “but what about…” questions. They tend to be all encompassing, broad and vague. Although this one is unfulfilling, it’s still an easy way out.

So I am going to go ahead and make an attempt at straddling these two types of definitions. I don’t think either of those types I mentioned, nor the one I am about to give, will ever leave me feeling with a sense of closure.

Art is an expression, a reflection and a consequence of living. A result of thoughts and emotions. Any of the preceding can come from the artist or the viewer. It’s the cause of or the result of provoking a reaction.  In order for it to be art is must be acknowledged as such by someone (including but not exclusive to the cause (often the artist) and the viewer).

what is art?

fierybetty:

art is a creative expression.

See “1” in my definition.
